If You Like This, You’ll Like That: Indie Heroes 3 Edition
With more than 500 games now available for Evercade across over 50 cartridges, we understand that it can sometimes be tricky to pick what you might want to play next. So in this first installment of a new feature on the Evercade blog, we’re going to take a look at all the games on a recently released cartridge — in today’s case, Indie Heroes Collection 3 — and suggest some other games from the complete Evercade library that you might want to spend some time with if you found yourself particularly enjoying a specific title.
We’d love to hear your suggestions, too! Be sure to share them on our social channels: you can catch up with us on Twitter, Facebook or Discord and let us know your best ideas!
If you like Donut Dodo, you’ll like…
Qwak
Donut Dodo is a great example of a classic ’80s style single-screen platformer. The objective is simple, the mechanics are clear and the emphasis is firmly on fun. With that in mind, if you like Donut Dodo, you’ll also appreciate Qwak from Team17 Collection 1. This is, like Donut Dodo, a simple single-screen platformer in which the emphasis is on collecting things. Unlike in Donut Dodo, where you simply have to avoid and outwit the enemies, in Qwak you can defeat your foes with a well-aimed egg. The overall aim is the same, though: collect all the shiny things as quickly as you can, and take aim for a high score!
If you like Thunder Paw, you’ll like…
Eyra, the Crow Maiden
Thunder Paw is a side-scrolling platformer in which the main aim is to defeat all the enemies on a stage before proceeding. With that in mind, if you like Thunder Paw, you’ll also enjoy Eyra, The Crow Maiden from Indie Heroes Collection 2. The aim in Eyra, The Crow Maiden is not to defeat all the enemies, but rather to rescue all the trapped warriors. Like in Thunder Paw, there’s an emphasis on finding creative ways to navigate the environment in order to reach targets in troublesome locations, and plenty of precision platforming to accomplish. Plus it’s one of the loveliest looking 16-bit games we’ve seen.
If you like Big2Small, you’ll like…
Old Towers
Big2Small is a puzzle game in which when you move a character, they don’t stop moving until they hit something. With that in mind, there’s one very clear recommendation for those who had fun helping Elle and friends find their favourite snacks: Old Towers from Mega Cat Studios Collection 1. This makes use of the same “move until you hit something” mechanic at a much higher speed, and the emphasis is on collecting lines of coins rather than individual items. It’s a fun twist on the same formula, and the catchy background music will keep you entertained while you puzzle out each stage!
If you like Magic and Legend: Time Knights, you’ll like…
Micro Mages
Magic and Legend: Time Knights is a platformer in which you must use the two playable characters’ attacks to defeat all the enemies on a stage. With that in mind, if you enjoyed Magic and Legend: Time Knights, you’ll also get a kick out of Micro Mages on Morphcat Games Collection 1. While the emphasis in Micro Mages is on making it to the exit of each stage rather than necessarily defeating all the enemies along the way, the vertically scrolling gameplay has some similarities to how Magic and Legend: Time Knights does things. Plus if you play on Evercade VS, you can bring up to three friends along to join the fun!
If you like Doodle World: Redrawn, you’ll like…
Boogerman
Doodle World: Redrawn is a side-scrolling platformer with an emphasis on making it through increasingly tricky stages, jumping on the heads of enemies as you go. The obvious suggestion here is, of course, the original Doodle World from Indie Heroes Collection 1, but assuming you want something a bit more “different”, you may also want to try Boogerman from Interplay Collection 1. This is a 16-bit title with beautifully slick and fluid animation, plus some huge levels to explore and dastardly bosses to defeat. Be warned, though; Boogerman was released at the height of early ’90s “grossout” humour, so expect lots of snot and farting!
If you like The Little Tales of Alexandria, you’ll like…
Deadeus
The Little Tales of Alexandria is a top-down adventure game in which you explore a small environment, discovering the story as you go. With that in mind, if you’re looking for more of the same, one of the best examples of this kind of game on Evercade is Deadeus on Indie Heroes Collection 1. This is a horror adventure with multiple endings in which you’re facing down the end of the world at the hands of a god who “loaned” humanity its flesh. There’s no combat in the game, so it’s all about exploration and discovery.
If you like Alien Cat 2: Enhanced Edition, you’ll like…
Chip’s Challenge
Alien Cat 2: Enhanced Edition is a top-down puzzle game in which you must negotiate perilous environments while collecting shiny objects. If you enjoy this sort of thing, you should spend some time with Chip’s Challenge on Atari Lynx Collection 2, which is an all-time classic take on this type of puzzle. While it lacks the “clone” aspect of Alien Cat 2, you’ll still need to think carefully before you make each move, and with nearly 150 levels to challenge it’ll keep you busy for a while!
If you like Bubble Seahorse Adventures, you’ll like…
Flea!
Bubble Seahorse Adventures is a precision platformer about safely making it to the exit, preferably collecting shiny things along the way. With that in mind, if you like Bubble Seahorse Adventures you’ll also have some fun with Flea! on Indie Heroes Collection 1, a platformer with the unique twist that the protagonist never stops jumping. While Flea!’s levels are single-screen rather than scrolling (with a few exceptions) you’ll find them just as fiendish and satisfying to solve!
If you like Orebody: Binder’s Tale, you’ll like…
Journey to Silius
Orebody: Binder’s Tale is a side-scrolling run-and-gun platformer about making constant progress forward while defeating powerful enemies. With that in mind, if you enjoy Orebody: Binder’s Tale, you’ll also have some fun with Journey to Silius on Sunsoft Collection 1. This is a challenging sci-fun run and gun game with tricky stages and fearsome bosses, so be sure to bring your A-game… or be ready with the save state function.
If you like Skate Cat, you’ll like…
Totally Rad
Skate Cat is a side-scrolling platformer in which you must negotiate a variety of perilous environments, gradually gaining new abilities as you progress. If you like that sort of thing, you’ll also like Totally Rad on Jaleco Collection 1. This is another 8-bit platformer with plenty of attitude about it, and a little more depth than Skate Cat offers thanks to its selectable magic powers and varied stages.
If you like Bone Marrow, you’ll like…
Romeow and Julicat
Bone Marrow is a strategic puzzle game with RPG elements in which you must match objects together to merge and power them up, then collect them to use against enemies. There’s nothing exactly like Bone Marrow elsewhere in the Evercade library because it’s such an original concept, but if you enjoy puzzles that involve cramming things into a limited space, they don’t come much better than Romeow and Julicat from Mega Cat Studios Collection 2. While it lacks the “combat” aspect of Bone Marrow, it’s still about making strategic use of the space available to you, and taking full advantage of the play mechanics to survive as long as you can.
If you like Chibi Monster Br4wl, you’ll like…
Super Homebrew War
Chibi Monster Br4wl is a chaotic multiplayer-centric platformer about collecting more berries than your opponents. If you enjoy this sort of thing, a very easy recommendation for something quite similar is Super Homebrew War on Indie Heroes Collection 1, which keeps the four-player platforming but places the emphasis on combat rather than collecting.
If you like Chew Chew Mimic, you’ll like…
Misplaced
Finally, Chew Chew Mimic is a puzzle game about forward planning. If you like this sort of thing, a different take on it can be found in Misplaced on Mega Cat Studios Collection 2. In that game, rather than plotting out moves in advance using puzzle pieces, you “record” a series of moves and then play them back at a different location, allowing you to temporarily defy the laws of the world in which the game unfolds.
